ABOUT BTM

As Canadians, we often hide in the shadows of our neighbours to the south when it comes to confronting our own issues of anti-Black racism and the plethora of challenges that we face. Beyond the March examines the methods, practices and strategies utilized by the Black community to try and interrupt anti-Black racism in Canada. The film’s protagonists, and life-long friends, Mark Holmes (Black) and Matt Cappuccitti (white), embark on a mission to amplify the voices of those in the Black community who are firmly entrenched in the fight for change; unearthing their tireless work and commitment to the cause.

Following the brutal murder of George Floyd and the seemingly endless number of victims in our own country; a random phone call between the two rapidly evolves into a couple of important questions - when the protest signs are laid down and the marches subside, what will the Black community do to continue the fight? What's next?

Inevitably, the pair forges ahead on their own journeys of self-reflection, discovery, growth, and reconciliation.  Over the course of the film, Mark begrudgingly confesses his guilt at not participating sooner in the fight against anti-black racism, while coming to terms with what it means to be Black in Canada. As for Matt, he confronts his own privilege and acknowledges the suffering and terrible injustices that have been inflicted on the Black community by white people. Facing potential ridicule and general distrust from the Black community, Matt’s undertaking is “simple” - what can he do to help?

While narrated from the perspective of the duo, the story emanates from those individuals who are doing the work to fight for equality and social justice. Beyond the March will tackle the present day issues of anti-Black racism head-on, and in doing so, will call attention to the inequities, inequalities and social injustices that exist here in Canada. Armed with their stories, we will also celebrate the accomplishments, achievements, and the great strides made despite their struggles
